I felt like I wanted to like this book and its characters far more than I actually did. My two major issues were that I found the obstacles for these characters unconvincing, especially his, and their dialogue was very flat--it did not seem to be connected to the inner emotions and dialogue as described by the author. I did enjoy Sophie's character, generally speaking, and how she did ultimately go after Evan.
Spoiler:

As I said earlier, I found Evan's motivations for not marrying unconvincing at best. The character of his and Julia's mother was bizarre to me--why is she so out of it, ten years plus after her husband's death? It also would have been a much more likely story if she revealed that their father was mad due to "pox" (syphilis), and I really thought the author was headed in that direction when she described visits to brothels, etc. No need to bring in the uncle at all. I also thought it extremely selfish of Evan to expose Sophie to all that scorn and ridicule versus marrying her.

In the end, while I liked the idea of a heroine doing the pursuing and laying it all out there, and a non-rake hero, the final execution fell flat.

The Earl I Adore A Prelude to a Kiss Novel Erin Knightley 9780451466792 Books Reviews

If you love traditional regency romances like Pride and Prejudice or Emma, I predict you love The Earl I Adore. I believe I detected a hint of inspiration from both of these romances, but with more than enough originality to keep the novel fresh.

The heroine, Sophie, was adorable. I love less-than-perfect heroines, especially diminutive ones with curves who play the oboe. I had to ignore the cover because she didn't look at all like the image of the woman I had in mind. The earl was a bit too perfect, even with his family secret, but he was genuinely sweet and charming. The story was written from both the hero and the heroine's POV, but the heroine definitely had the starring role. Perhaps that's another reason the book reminded me so much of a traditional regency.

The supporting characters were good. If you've ever seen the A&E production of Pride and Prejudice, Sophie's mother could have been Elizabeth Bennet's mother's long lost twin. She was that manipulative. My understanding is that the cadre of friends surrounding Sophie play the leading role in other novels. I'm eager to read some of those stories, especially May's.

I picked up The Earl I Adore because I was looking for a clean romance. So much of what I end up reading is "steamy" at a minimum because that seems to be what's most available. (Don't you wish sites like allowed you to search by heat level?) However, I was in the mood for something that wasn't so explicit, and I wanted to see how other authors write clean romances without losing the sizzle that makes a romance a romance.

I suspect I'll pick up another novel by Erin Knightly in the near future. My understanding is that despite her suggestive covers, her other books are also a breath of fresh air in the steamy romance world.
I am a fan of Ms Knightley but I must say that her latest novel The Earl I Adore, was not my favorite. This novel lacked the great characters I have so enjoyed in her other books.

Heroine Sophie is soon to face social ruin because of her older sister's elopement (forget that her sister is madly in love, all that matters is Sophie.) Sophie is a talker except in the presence of hero John "Evan" Fairfax, Earl of Evansleigh, with him she is tongue tied. She loves him even though she has only had one dance with him and virtually no conversations.

Evan and Sophie begin a friendship (platonic on his part) that takes them around Bath and to various musical festivals. Both are music lovers. Evan really wants to keep his relationship with Sophie devoid of romance, he does enjoy her company. Evan and his sister (by far, the most interesting person in this novel) have made a pact to never marry and the reader does not know why until later in the book.

Sophie tends to be a little braver than Evan when it comes to her emotions. Sophie's mother reminds me of Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice without the enduring charm. She is manipulative and puts her daughter in embarrassing situations and open to public scorn and worse to shame.

Spoiler...What bothered me most in this novel was how the leads don't have the courage to face problems. When Sophie discovers Evan's secret she decides to be "noble" and not force him into a decision he does not want. His credo is "I will not burden my partner". Does this mean he would not want to be burdened by a wife's potential decline in health or wealth? Does sickness and health and for richer and poorer and better or worse really mean anything to him? And why didn't Sophie fight for him and vow no matter what the future held she would be by his side. Also it was inconceivable that Evan and his sister would never discuss their pact to never marry with their parent. It makes no sense. At least his sister was wiser. Evan comes across as insensitive with his sibling.

This is a very clean book. This couple has many conversations which for the most part are well written. I just did not enjoy their romantic journey; they make very good friends though.
