Love this author. When I am in the mood for a more complex story about family and history then I go to her. I always enjoy reading her books. I loved seeing the interaction between all the characters. The romance was a little more understated and slow moving but I was in the mood for a more family dynamic book so it was fine. I loved Venus and Gibs connection, though romance was slow the bond there was deep and always present. All the characters in the book have rich dynamic personalities and backgrounds. I love finding out more about them and the family's history.

When Venus Fell A Novel Deborah Smith 9780553562798 Books Reviews

I have always enjoyed stories about the South and the quirky people who live there, and this story was right up there with the best of them. Fanny Flag would give it a thumbs up! I quickly learned to care about each of the characters, and to be concerned about what would happen to them. I laughed and cried, and saw again how accidents of fate beyond our ability to control, can influence our lives in good ways and bad. A truly enjoyable read.

This is one of those books you just can't put down. My only complaint is that the plot is a little over-complicated for such a simple premise but it's still worth the read. A great book to take on vacation or if you want a story to really suck you in.
How can anyone not read a Debra Smith book and not feel the gentle tug of heart strings? All her work comes from her deep rooted southern heart that she willingly shares with all of us. Thank you my dear for all your glorious work.
I finished this book this week and I enjoyed it but it was not as strong of a book as Miracle, Crossroads Cafe and a Place Called Home. It is a sensible book with enough angst to keep me interested but the end result was a foregone conclusion at least to me from early on in the story. The author is at her best with her thick application of detail to all scenes. One area that was a little confusing is the number of characters in this story and keeping them straight was a job at times. I would have to stop and try and figure out who the character was that was involved at that time but still worth the read.
Deborah Smith does it again! I am reading her books backwards, meaning the last ones first and the first ones now.

Ms Smith's ability to tell the stories of people who live in out-of-the-way mountain valley is astonishing. To read one of her books is like visiting old friends, comfortable and inviting.

The plot points are as wholesome as homemade apple pie. The folks in the Appalachian Mountains are as real and engaging as a fresh day after an afternoon rain. Try to read all of her books and slip into a comfy chair, feet by the fire, and enjoy the. ultimate
Diverse characters, large sense of family living close to and working with nature honoring the land. Her books give a wonderful sense of love and concern for family, history, with well drawn characters that the reader comes to find a few new friends.
Despite being called a romance, this is a book filled with interesting characters and concerns far beyond romance or sex. Venus is the eldest daughter of a Japanese/Italian-American father who was interned. Her mother died very young and Venus attempted to protect her sister, Ella, ever after. The internment of Japanese-Americans embittered her father who probably rightly blamed his mother's heart attack and death a year after internment on their imprisonment. This musical family created music and inherited some skills along with the skills being nurtured. The wedding of the parents was a mythical story told repeatedly by the mother before her death, and Venus practiced her piano daily looking at the photo of a boy near her parents she imagined would make her life happier and who would protect her. Meeting him and the rest of his family transforms the lives of her and her sister in sometimes painful ways. Fascinating characters fill this book, interesting Tennessee mountain living is as much a character, ethics, family, loyalty, trust, big issues abound. All this in a page turner. Warning, you may neglect some duties as did I turning the pages of When Venus Fell.
