very dry writing here, lots of slogging through tedious terrain to get to a battle. Its sort of boring, not grand space opera in the style of pulp masters like EE Doc smith ( lensman ) , more much realistic and gritty. Its not quite what I expected.
The starfishers are a spoiler here, show up like the calvary in a B Western. Anyway, I'm going to skip the rest of the series.

Glen Cook is one of my favorite fantasy and SF authors and he shows a lot of imagination in this series as well as creating an interesting read. Although not as exceptional as his "Black Company" and "Garrett, P.I." series, his general excellence as a writer makes this enjoyable.
I can hardly wait to crack open this book! Glen Cook is my favorite contemporary science fiction writer. His realism, grit and hard-boiled characters are a joy. Gotta go . . .
I enjoy most of Glen Cooks works and this was no exception. Strong characters mixed with a dense plot of political intrigue and house to house warfare on an interstellar scale.
Typical of most of Cook's novels it has a lot of twists and turns. A very good read overall.
Fun read, had to back track a couple times to keep track of some stuff, but I enjoyed it and will probably grab the next book.
I ordered this book after reading Glen's excellent Black Company series. While it's not perfect and a little un-cohesive, it's still better than most of the garbage that you have to sift though while you wait for something decent to come out.

Glen is a fun writer who loved killing off major characters way before George Martin made it cool. I read his books while I'm waiting for today's big writers to release their new novels.
I've been a Glen Cook fan for many years. After reading the Black Company titles and the Garret titles, Shadowline did not disappoint. The story and characters don't disappoint (although there was a character or two I would have liked to see developed a bit more). The reason I deducted a star was for the poor editing I found in the edition. It was replete with typos such as "thj" instead of "the". They became so frequent, it sort of spoiled the flow while reading. Perhaps the printed edition is better...
