Straight-up: LOVED “This Was Not the Plan” by Cristina Alger. I relished the voice, the pace, the plot, and the characters. The novel is both a gut-wrenching and a hilarious tale of a Single Dad who cannot seem to get his life together … until he does. The tone is Jonathan Tropper meets “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” meets “I Don’t Know How She Does It.” Only “she” in this case is a he … as in thirty-three-year-old Charlie Goldwyn, a prestigious lawyer whose messed up life goes from bad to worse, and spirals out-of-control. In a nutshell: Charlie’s beautiful, earthy wife who he loved deeply dies tragically, leaving him a widow to raise his quirky, independent young son. A workaholic who uses ungodly billable hours to mask his pain, Charlie goes on a bender and loses it ... until a wakeup call forces him to come to terms with his manhood and all its complicated facets: father, son, provider, lover. It is a coming-of-age story that makes you laugh and cry as Charlie “grows up” and ultimately reaches his full potential. Alger literally had me laughing aloud in a long car ride, under my covers, in the carpool line ….and most of all, I would find "stolen moments" just to devour this highly entertaining and thought-provoking take on Parenthood.Tags : This Was Not the Plan: A Novel [Cristina Alger] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This is a wonderful story about a widow with a small son who works his ass off at a law firm. The story takes off from there with his sister , boss and various other s. There are struggles and conflict s that eventually get resolved. I enjoyed every page.
I liked this book mainly because Cristina Alger is a good writer. She fully developed her characters and the story moved at a good pace. It was a little predictable but that didn't take anything away from the book.
Lovely writing. A tender, funny, sweet book. A salve to the open wound of every overworked lawyer parent. Affirming. Touches on common fears with a reasurring hand. Leaves one feeling full and contented at the end. Human and ticklish. Five stars.
I read this on the recommendation of a friend and absolutely loved it! I was totally caught off guard by the plot twists, and loved the surprise ending. The characters are well written and likable. Most of all, Alger hit on a topic that really hasn't been explored yet- work/life balance for dads. We hear so much about women, but so little about men. I also loved the detail that went into the the little boy in the story, he was so adorable. The book reminds us that things aren't always what they seem on the surface, and while family relationships can be complicated, they are worth the extra effort it sometimes takes. It was truly heartwarming. Next on my list- her first book The Darlings!
I am a big fan of Ms. Alger's work, and while I also loved The Darlings, it feels like she really hit her stride with this book. It's rare to find a book that blends whip-smart observation with humor and more moving themes, but this book hits all the right notes. Her characterizations of moneyed New York characters are always lots of fun, and her depiction of Caleb (the boy) in particular felt right on the money, like he could spring off the page (my kingdom for a child like Caleb.) The pacing of the story is perfect. Alger's writing also has that addictive, can't-put-it-down quality; I read the entire book in one sitting, on a nine-hour flight, and felt sad when I reached the end (not because the ending was sad, but because there wasn't any more to read.) Highly recommend this book!!!
When I began reading this book, I expected it to be entertaining and witty, which it is; but what blew me away about this book was how emotionally invested I became in the lives of these characters and their stories. There were laugh out loud moments, cringe-worthy moments, but what I will remember most about this book are the tender, heartfelt scenes throughout. Charlie Goldwyn became a single dad to Caleb after losing his wife in a horrific plane crash, but he is also a corporate lawyer working 100 hours a week with no time or energy left for his son. Following a drunken tirade during a party hosted by his firm, Charlie suddenly finds himself with nothing but time to spend with Caleb, and he's torn between finding another job to financially support his family and getting to know his bright, wonderful son. This novel is filled with endearing characters, and Charlie and Caleb and the rest of them will worm their way into your hearts. A heartfelt book full of wit and warmth, This Was Not the Plan is a compelling book about families, parenthood, and finding that perfect balance in our lives that we all strive for.
Felt like I was reading a book written to be made into a Hallmark movie. I didn't particularly find the main characters very engaging or endearing.
There were a lot of situations in this book that just didn't seem very realistic. There's a mom who didn't take assistance from her married lover. I think that was suppose to say something positive about her character. I also never met a normal 5 year old who couldn't find their classroom once they were inside a school unless they were new to it. There are endless things like that
