I have loved this authors writing since I started reading fantasy. Tolkien was my first but Dennis McKiernan made me fall in love with genre. This is a tale of vengeance with a philosophy about the battle between good and evil. This has darkness this has light and with the way he writes it makes you think. I am glad I reread this and it made me fall in love with Mithgar all over again.

Good book.
I absolutely loved this book!
I don't think you can go wrong with McKiernan's books, been reading him for over 20 years. Loved this book, enjoy the high fantasy...
The has long been one of my favorite books and authors. This a joy of a book.
The cover was painted by a very skilled and somewhat famous artist. I'll keep the name to myself so that the book has something of mystery to give any new readers. This is my second stab at this author. I was really hoping that his style changed depending on the books but I was disappointed to find out that his style was the same. Long stories, little action and lots of stealing. He steals. Page 364 to page 366, this myth of the Seeress was taken right out of Roman myth. In fact much of the things he writes about, the cultures, the history, the way of life, were taken out of history and myth and legend. I understand that it is hard to find original ideas but at least TRY before stealing stuff from every source on the planet. I think there were some things taken from AD&D in some of the chapters. Tolkein had LONG stories, yes, but they were never BORING.
Maybe less made up words for creatures I can't even picture, because he never really describes them, and more original cultures and characters! The settings and scenes seemed so bland, boring, so overly used!
I've read this book at least half a dozen times in the last 10 years, and it never gets old. If you're a fan of Tolkien and other traditional high fantasy authors, the world building and cultural development will be satisfying, and the characters and story are just as compelling. The beginning is slow, but the rest of the story totally makes up for it. I recommend this book to everyone I meet who is interested in or curious about the fantasy genre.
Great Story and in hardbound book form which I like the most for durability. I read this story so many times the bindings on the soft cover were destroyed. McKiernan is great!!
