OK...so there may be a few issues (such as, though I am no equestrienne, I doubt one would use matched stallions to pull a carriage), and an anachronism here & there relative to social mores, but this is a wonderfully entertaining little story/romance. The characters are well fleshed-out, and it is probably the only Regency romance I have read that made me laugh out loud, not once, but multiple times. That's worth something! There are some truly funny scenes & conversational exchanges in this one. One reviewer objects to the scene in which our hero & heroine first attempt to consummate their mutual attraction - I found it a wonderfully written, outrageously humour-packed, no-harm-done-to-either-party, totally original approach by an author who has both "lived" and developed a fine-tuned sense of humour (and of absurdity) to cope with living. It was one of my laugh-out-loud moments. There's a mystery involving blackmail, but this serves more, I suspect to frame the romance & drive the plot, than to appeal to, oh, day, Sherlock Holmes fans. I totally enjoyed the book.

This was a very satisfying read. Both the hero and heroine were likeable and the mystery was intriguing and served to move the plot forward.

We start out with the heroine, Iphiginia, masquerading as the hero, Marcus' former mistress in an attempt to flush out a blackmailer. She's been led to believe that Marcus was killed by the blackmailer so she thinks she's safe in her charade. For a time her plan works and she insinuates herself into the most exclusive circles in the ton with her outrageous behavior and singularly eye-catching style of dress. Everything is going fine until Marcus shows up alive and wanting to know just who she is and why she's pretending to be his mistress.

After that Marcus joins her in the search for the blackmailer and there's enough action to keep things moving. Iphiginia didn't fall into the trap of being TSTL like so many romance novel heroines so that was good. And it was refreshing to read a Regency novel where the subject of protecting the heroine's reputation was never an issue. Since she's masquerading as a widow, not to mention Marcus' mistress, Iphiginia's reputation is more or less bulletproof.

My only real complaint was that, as usual, AQ/JAK ruined the initial sex scene. I don't know why JAK is so in love with the idea of making the couple's first time together be a disaster. It happens in almost all her books. The hero doesn't find out until it's too late that the heroine is a virgin and all the heroine experiences is pain while the hero loses control and emasculates himself after a maximum of 30 seconds. Why on earth would anyone think that's the sort of thing that needs to go in ANY romance novel, let alone every single one she writes? It's mystifying.

Other than that, it was a solid and enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed this story of a Yorkshire farmer who becomes an Earl, and the young lady who wins his heart, far more than I thought I would. It kept me up listening late into the night as the mystery was unraveled. I loved it so much that I bought Paid Companion as well and will listen to that one next. (It's great, too!)

The Earl of Masters has been badly hurt by love. In self defense, he has established a list of rules to protect himself from further pain. One day a "friend" visits him at his country estate, and tells him that a young woman is moving about in society, inferring in all the ballrooms of London that she's his ex mistress. He has no idea who she is, but he isn't about to let the farce continue. Of course, when he confronts her, he finds himself intrigued by her reasons for the deception.

What ensues is a mystery of blackmail and murder that really grabbed my attention. I loved Ephigenia, the "ex mistress," and how interesting she was as a character. There were some moments when I thought she was made to seem too naive, but I was so absorbed in the story that it didn't bother me at all.

Re Audiobook Barbara Rosenblat was a real surprise as the narrator. Her English dialects were spot on, if a little over the top in some places. In other parts of her performance, she was as good as Rosalyn Landor, and I don't say that lightly.

Highly recommended.
